Protect What Matters. Protect Your Hearing.

Using hearing protection is a wonderful way to care for your hearing health. Here are some common FAQs and misconceptions about hearing protection and loud sounds:

1. Are people who work in a loud noise environment every day the only people who should wear hearing protection?

No. This is definitely not true. There are many other situations in life when hearing protection is recommended. These other situations include concerts, sporting events, hunting, mowing the lawn, and working on DIY projects with power tools. If you find that your ears start to ring after attending certain events or performing certain activities, this may be an indication that the sound was too loud.

2. Will wearing hearing protection during a concert or band practice make the music sound terrible?

Actually, it could. If you wear foam earplugs or non high-fidelity earplugs, the sound quality may be distorted. HOWEVER, if you wear high-fidelity music earplugs, then the sound distortion is greatly reduced. Consider trying out a pair of non-custom high-fidelity earplugs such as ETY plugs. They can be found online from various retailers such as Walmart or Amazon. Do you find yourself constantly using high-fidelity earplugs, maybe it would be a good idea to consider custom high-fidelity musician's earplugs. Space City Audiology offers several custom high-fidelity hearing protection options to meet your specific needs.

3. If I wear hearing protection, should I still have my hearing tested regularly?

Yes. Whether you have hearing loss or not, having your hearing tested regularly is a great idea to monitor your hearing health. If you are found to have normal hearing, it is recommended that your hearing be re-checked about every two years. If you are found to have hearing loss, it is recommended that your hearing be re-checked about once a year.
